KETAMINE TREATMENT
A new approach to mental health treatment and so much more

What is ketamine?
Ketamine Explained
Ketamine is the first legal clinician-prescribed psychedelic treatment to help relieve mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and PTSD. Other psychedelic medicines such as psilocybin and MDMA will be available soon, pending FDA approval.
Research has shown that ketamine can help with many mental health conditions rooted in trauma. Trauma is a learned response that “hijacks” the body and sends an individual quickly into a state of panic or hyperarousal. Psychedelic therapies can help to re-pattern the conditioned trauma response to recreate different brain pathways and responses. Psychedelic therapy can rapidly bring up memories, life experiences, or emotions with the added benefit of nervous system calming and reduced blood flow to areas of the brain such as the amygdala (fear center) and hippocampus (memory center). The psychedelic experience creates a powerful disruption in the conditioned trauma response. This can reduce a person’s “activation” around the distressing memory or memories. Psychedelic healing may improve brain plasticity (making change easier) as well as increase emotional distress tolerance.
What are the steps to get treatment?
What to expect
Ketamine treatments at Trillium are screened, prescribed, and supervised by medical professionals. After it is decided that ketamine is a good fit for your treatment, you will have a ketamine experience. Following that experience, integration sessions are scheduled within the next 1-4 days and are one hour sessions.
Ketamine experiences take place in a private, cozy room on a comfortable recliner. An eye mask may be worn throughout, while listening to curated playlist via noise-canceling headphones – creating the optimal setting for an uninterrupted, inner experience. A health professional will be either in the room with you, or just outside. The health professional will take your vital signs and monitor your safety. Once the experience is complete, you can take as much time as you need to recover in your room, but prepare to take at least 30 minutes. During the recovery period, you can take notes, record what you want to remember, or sit with an open, peaceful mindset.
You can expect to be in the clinic between 2 hours and 4 hours. We prefer you to have more time than you need, so no step in the process is rushed. After the IV treatment, you will need a responsible driver to drive you home. It is preferred that your driver is flexible with timing. Integration sessions can be in-person or online.

What form of ketamine do you use?
Intravenous and Intramuscular Explained
We use ketamine either IV or IM as these allow for an adequately deep experience for healing, which may be necessary for more lasting anti-depressant and anti-anxiety effects. Intranasal and oral forms of ketamine do not allow as deep an experience.
During your first experience, you will be given the medicine in IV form. This is to allow us to determine dosing of IM or IV medicine for the future, and allow you a gentle entryway to “ego loosening.” Subsequent ketamine experiences may be either IM or IV, depending on your preference and the doctor’s recommendation. IM ketamine tends to be a more abrupt entry into the dissociative experience. The second and third experiences will encourage you to go from “ego loosensing” to “ego dissolution,” a much deeper state of consciousness. This allows you to get in touch with the self, your challenging areas, and perhaps mystical realms. During this time you can gain the capacity to explore insights, see things in a new way, and experience more objectivity regarding past traumatic events.
After each journey, you will have an integration appointment with Dr. Thomson, during which time we will explore the journey and how it relates to your daily life. You may already be experiencing less reactivity and more calm. We will set intentions for the next journey, or make a plan for future boosters if needed.

HOW I WORK WITH CLIENTS
For Ketamine-Assisted Psychedelic Healing, I offer an individualized approach that centers around a series of 3 to 6 ketamine journeys utilizing intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) administration of the medicine. A medical intake session and a preparation session are held before we begin. Each journey is followed by an hour-long integration session within 1-4 days. After the initial series of either 3 or 6 journeys with integration, booster treatments may be provided as needed. Sessions are conducted in person, with options for either virtual or in-person integration sessions.
During the initial intake, we will discuss your goals of treatment as well as lifestyle, medical, and nutritional factors that could be helpful in creating lasting results for you. Since ketamine opens the door for new ways of thinking and being in the world, this is an optimal time to make positive health changes that will continue to support you.
